Historically, most hurricanes impact North Carolina between August and October. It is imperative that you are prepared throughout the Hurricane Season which runs June 1 through November 30. These storms are capable of producing heavy rains, floods, and possibly tornadoes. The information below can help you prepare your home for potential danger and effects from a hurricane.
In Preparation for a Hurricane
- Watch and listen to weather reports
- Have cash on hand and fuel in vehicles
- Discuss communication plans with family
- Find a shelter should you need to evacuate to your home
- Secure property
- Know evacuation routes
- Update emergency supplies kit
Recommended Items for a Basic Emergency Supply Kit
- Water (one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation)
- Food (at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food for each person)
- Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert (extra batteries for both)
- Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
- Important family documents, such as copies of insurance policies, identifications and bank records in a waterproof, portable container
- Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- Can opener for non-perishable food
- Local maps
- Prescription medications and glasses
- Infant formula and diapers
- Pet food and extra water for your pet
- Cash or traveler's checks and change
- Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items
- Matches in a waterproof container
- Fire Extinguisher

- Paper and pencil
- First Aid Kit
After the Hurricane
- Be aware of flooded or washed out roads. Turn Around, Don't Drown!
- Stay away from low handing or downed power lines.
- Check your home for structural damage before re-entering.
